Steve (the newest lead and most youthful member of Tune Struck) has always enjoyed singing acapella music. From the rounds sung in the car on family vacations to Alfred Burt Carols sung in high school madrigal choir, to doo wop, spirituals, and church chamber music — unaccompanied vocals have always piqued his musical interest.
Barbershop caught Steve’s attention in earnest at age 18 when a friend invited him to join a quartet of high school students. It didn’t last long before the foursome went on their academic ways, but the hook was set.
During the transition from college to professional life in education, Steve was invited by a teacher he worked with to the Stockton Portsmen’s practice in 1986. He soon became a Barbershop Harmony Society & Chapter member, met Al (our tenor) and sang as a substitute for a Chapter quartet, the Dispensers of Musical Libation.
After a few years, family and professional responsibilities took him away from the Portsmen, but never quieted his draw to singing. However, Steve found that teachers often enjoy singing and joined foursomes of staff members at a couple local high schools singing in the halls, staff meetings, talent shows and homecoming. Never anything formal until now. Retirement and the slower pace of life has afforded him the time to commit to a barbershop quartet. He rejoined the Portsmen again in 2018, ringing chords and laughing with his friends.
Steve enjoys the outdoors, disc golf, serving others through his church, assisting local high school track and field teams; and hopes to increase the time he spends with his three kids, three grand kids, and three great grand kids.
